Critical Thinking Essay: The Dangers of Fracking

For my Critical thinking research I chose to write about the negative effects of hydraulic fracturing. I argued that it should be banned in the US because is poses serious threats to the environments and health of the people in the communities in which it occurs.

This paper required days of research before I could even begin writing. Before this assignment I often had trouble with research papers. Either I would only present one side of the argument, or I simply wouldn’t do thorough research and I wouldn’t have adequate evidence for my argument. I didn’t have much previous knowledge of Fracking and so it was apparent that I would have to do extensive research. Critical thinking means that one considers different perspectives and arguments and develops an opinion based on facts and evidence. I believe that this assignment demonstrates my growth in the category of critical thinking because I present both sides of the hydro-fracking discussion. I admit that there are significant economic benefits to fracking; however, I argue that the risks of contamination, pollution, and damage to residents living near fracking sites outweigh these benefits.

I am very content oriented in my writing. This essay shows this. It also shows that I have a weakness when it comes to the technical aspects. Although I received an ‘A’ on this assignment, if I were to do it over again, I would have to be more careful with my diction and grammar. Besides the grammar issues however, I am satisfied with the quality of my paper.
