Review of an Irish Carol

For my 2nd quarter play review I went to see an Irish Carol by Mathew Keenan at the Keegan Theatre. It is a play about Capitalism vs relationships and that the constant pursuit of wealth will cause you to alienate those around you.

When it comes to theatre it is difficult for me to identify themes. Because I am watching the story I get very into the story and I forget to think about things like themes. For this play I had to remember to not only pay close attention to the story but also think critically about the play as I viewed it. Although I had an idea of what the theme was it was still difficult to translate this idea onto paper. I had to contemplate for a good hour before I could form a coherent theme. Throughout the play I realized that the main character David hurts the relationships that he has with other people because of his obsession with personal gains. He works constantly and it bitter to those who would call themselves his friends. It is only when he stops thinking about work and money and starts considering the problems of those around him that he is happy.
This project helped to develop my ability to analyze media. I used to watch a movie, read a book, or view a play and not think about the messages that these works were trying to convey. This assignment helped me think more deeply when viewing media.
In the Future I will be more proficient in analyzing media and identifying key aspects and messages. This is an essential skill not only in the CAP program but later in life because my work will likely involve media in some way. This play review was difficult because I am used to viewing media in a more passive manor and not thinking deeply about what I view
Assignments like this are essential in order to develop a person’s ability to evaluate media. Before entering the CAP program the way that I experienced media was different. Now I consider the message that the media attempts to portray
